Published in GhanaAnansinisim is an exploration of identity, spirituality, culture, and tradition through photography and body painting. Inspired by the wisdom of Ananse, the Akan trickster and storyteller, this book visually reinterprets African heritage for a contemporary audience.
In this collection, Ghanaian artist Oscar Korbla Mawuli Awuku weaves together ancestral symbols, body art, and photography to challenge perspectives on self-representation and history. With a unique fusion of precolonial African aesthetics and modern visual storytelling, Anansinisim invites viewers into a world where the past informs the present and the body becomes a living archive.

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Hathor was the goddess of love, beauty, joy, and fertility. She was often depicted as a cow, with large horns that symbolized her power and strength. The skull of the cow in my work represents the goddess’s association with death and rebirth, as well as her role as a protector of the dead.
The piece captures the essence of the Egyptian goddess Hathor and pays homage to her powerful and complex symbolism.
